Hello Fred, i am Michael from Greece.
I want to buy a high gain tube head, i had one before, B-52 AT-100, but it was too heavy, i couldn't stand the lifting
(B-52 head was 25kg) so i sold it, sadly. I don't use so many effects, just the basic. I am on tight budget also,
so i am between 2 options, buying Laney Ironheart 60w (
http://www.thomann.de/gr/laney_irt60h_ironheart.htm)
or ΑΜΤ Stonehead (
http://www.thomann.de/gr/amt_stonehead_sh504.htm). I know Stonehead is not a tube
amp but from the videos i have seen so far from it, i think i like it. The question i want to ask you is the below:
Stonehead isn't a tube head BUT, does it sound like a tube amp? It's almost impossible to find it here in my country
and test/listen it (we don't have any AMT dealer here, so we will never have the amp here), so please answer me if
you could this little question and give me any other useful info about the amp. I asked Ola what would he prefer
between these 2 amps and he said he would choose Stonehead. Also do you have any sound experience from
Ironheart (it's 16kg and has built-in attenuator, i kinda liked it, too)?
Any help would be appreciated very much!!
Thanks in advance, Michael

Hi Michael,
I use it all the time, and I own a ton of tube heads. It doesn't sound "like a tube amp", especially as most tube amps are pretty much Soldano wannabes anyway when it comes to high gain, and I do own a Soldano myself.

The tones are great and it's stupidly versatile, while the EQ range is very useful, so you're not stuck with some "magic EQ" that you can't touch.
With tube amps, we tend to get little to no power amp sag as it is, as they are designed to have HUGE headroom in the power section and let the preamp do the dirty work, so the whole tube sound thing is, I must say, rather mythified in many ways, mostly from people that claim a variety of mojo enhancing powers that aren't as black and white as portrayed. Personally, as long as I get the sort of sag and dynamic response I want, you can give me a steam-powered amp for all I care! Haha!

Between that and the Laney, no questions - I'd pick the AMT any day.
Cheers,
Fred
